Garifuna Survival LA
Pilgrimage to Yurumein
In March 2026 the Garifuna Survival Committee made a delegation to Yurumein, our homeland. We participated in National Heroes Day in which St. Vincent celebrates its most famous of heroes, Joseph Chatuyer, chief of the Garifuna.
We learned about what our ancestors experienced when being exiled to Balceaux by the infamous British empire. We learned about the conditions of Garifuna community who remained in St. Vincent. We witnessed the announcement of Prime Minister Friday to teach our indigenous language in schools.
Most importantly we built closer relationships with each other and informed the work we’re doing to reclaim and maintain our heritage.
