L.A. Wanaragua 2026

Date

January 1, 2026

Location

South Los Angeles

Wanaragua is a traditional Garifuna dance performed primarily during the Christmas and New Year celebrations in Garifuna communities. It features masked dancers, vibrant costumes, and lively drumming, serving as a cultural expression that preserves the Garifuna heritage.

It is said in some parts of the Garifuna Nation that the dance commemorates an important battle between Garifuna Warriors and colonial British soldiers. But you’ll have to do your research to learn more about that story. I see the celebration as a form of resistance, skill, and art.
